Religion &

Human Rights

A growing resource web on religion and human rights in its many dimensions: history, norms, politics and national/regional developments.

About This Resource Web

Human Right

Religion

Human rights discourse has always interacted with religions in many ways. This resource web provides articles on the interfaces between human rights and religion in theory and practice. It examines tensions in the founding of universal human rights, attempts to overcome them, the governance of human rights and religion in different countries, and how religious rights intersect with other rights, such as freedom of expression, and other issues, such as gender, environment, disability, and others. In this early stage, many materials focus on Islam and Indonesia, but this growing web will cover more countries, religions and issues.

Chapters

Explore Human Rights and Sharia: A Study — a comprehensive reflection on the harmony and tension between Islamic law and universal human rights.

Many articles on this website came from the chapters in the book Shari’a and Human Rights (eds. Cekli S. Pratiwi, Lena Larsen, Brett G. Scharffs, dan Tore Lindholm, Penerbit Mizan, 2022), added with others published elsewhere. This web is curated by Zainal Abidin Bagir and maintained by the Indonesian Consortium for Religious Studies, with the support of the Oslo Coalition for Freedom of Religion or Belief and the International Center for Law and Religion Studies, Brigham Young University.
